As a young boy and through his teenage years, Roberto Benigni was an introvert and was studying to become a priest at the Jesuit Seminary in Florence. However, he was forced to go home when the Arno River flooded and then went back to school. His first experience in front of an audience was when he performed in town squares with the Modin Circus.
After his movie Vita è bella, La (1997) received seven Academy Award nominations, he met the Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro and said, after shaking his hand: "Now I have the Oscar in my hand!".
His father Luigi Benigni (1918-2004), who worked as a farmer, carpenter and bricklayer, was a prisoner in the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen between 1943 and 1945. Roberto used his stories as the basis for his film Vita è bella, La (1997).
Roberto Begnini wrote and directed Johnny Stecchino, the story of a mild-mannered bus driver who’s the spitting image of Italy’s most wanted mobster, The Little Devil, and The Monster. =]
In September 1972 he decided to try his luck as an actor and together with his friends, Aldo Buti, Carlo Nonni and Silvano Ambrogi he went to Rome where he got his very first part in the Satiri Theater. Since his theater debut he did several television appearances until when in 1977 he got his first role in the movie Berlinguer Ti Volgio Bene
