Many wonder if Leonardo was gay. Certainly he never married nor had children. We have no hard fact on lovers (man or woman), though it is recognised that his relationship with Giacomo Salai, a pupil who lived with him from 1490, was probably a homosexual one. He was also accused of homosexual acts in 1476 (the intolerance of the time meant burning at the stake was not unheard of for this “crime”), though the case was dismissed due to lack of evidence. Of course, the question is of little relevance, the right answer being quite simply, “who cares”.

But he's almost equally famous for his astonishing multiplicity of talents: he dabbled in architecture, sculpture, engineering, geology, hydraulics and the military arts, all with success, and in his spare time doodled parachutes and flying machines that resembled inventions of the 19th and 20th centuries.

His first commission, to paint an altarpiece for the chapel of the Palazzo Vecchio, the Florentine town hall, was never executed. His first large painting, The Adoration of the Magi (begun 1481, Uffizi), left unfinished, was ordered in 1481 for the Monastery of San Donato a Scopeto, Florence.

To study human anatomy, Da Vinci dissected 30 corpses in hospital basements in Milan, Florence, and Rome. He was the first person to correctly draw the bones of the hands, feet, spine, and face. This led to the design of the first robot in 1495, called Leonardo's Robot.

Leonardo da Vinci trained as a painter during the Renaissance. He described many experiments to test his ideas. He was one of the first to take a scientific approach towards understanding how our world works and how we see it.

Leonardo's scientific and technical observations are found in his handwritten manuscripts, of which over 4000 pages survive, including the one pictured on the right, showing some rock formations. It seems that Leonardo planned to publish them as a great encyclopedia of knowledge, but like many of his projects, this one was never finished

Leonardo began work on The Last Supper in 1495 and completed it in 1498—however, he did not work on the piece continuously throughout this period. The Last Supper specifically portrays the reaction given by each apostle when Jesus said one of them would betray him. All twelve apostles have different reactions to the news, with various degrees of anger and shock.
