In the heart of the city of Bergamo, lies the Piazza Vecchia, which has a 12th century bell tower. At 10 o'clock every night, the bell rings 100 times. This has been done since medieval times to warn farmers to come in before the city doors are closed for the night.

Bergamo is a town in Lombardy, Italy, about 40km northeast of Milan. The commune is home to circa 117,000 inhabitants. It is served by the Orio al Serio Airport, which also serves the Province of Bergamo.
Pope John XXIII was born in Bergamo.
The city is capital of the province of that name in Lombardy.

Most of modern Bergamo spreads over the plain below the old town. This Città Bassa (lower town) was laid out around the beginning of the twentieth century, and is composed of pleasant wide boulevards. The two parts of town are linked by a funicular.
Bergamo is divided in two parts with quite a distinct atmosphere. The Città Alta is the old part of town, it has small steep streets with old houses and many churches, and the Città Bassa brings you the fast paced Italian life of the industrialized north.
